Q: Can an oncology virtual medical assistant make treatment or triage decisions?

No, and that boundary is the fixed point of the role. Treatment decisions, symptom triage and any clinical judgment stay with the oncology care team. The assistant handles administration and coordination, so it moves the prior authorization, books the chair and preps the paperwork while a nurse or physician decides what happens to the patient.

What does an oncology virtual medical assistant do about chemotherapy prior authorization?

The assistant assembles and submits the authorization request for the chemotherapy or infusion drug, tracks it against the scheduled treatment date, and works appeals and peer-to-peer requests when a payer denies. It is high-volume, high-stakes work because a delay pushes back an infusion. A specialty-trained assistant reads a regimen and a payer policy without needing a clinician to translate.

Which platforms should an oncology assistant know?

Look for Epic Beacon, OncoEMR, iKnowMed or Flatiron on a resume. Each is oncology-specific rather than a general EHR, so naming one signals the candidate has worked inside regimen ordering, chair scheduling and payer workflows. Treat it as a signal that shortens the ramp, not a hard filter, since a candidate who ran one oncology system usually adapts to another quickly.

How much does an oncology virtual medical assistant cost through Honest Taskers?

Rates run $10.00 to $12.65 an hour, billed hourly with no weekly minimum, depending on background, schedule, scope and location. There are no payroll taxes, benefits or workspace costs layered on top. For context, the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median US medical secretary wage at $45,930 a year before an employer load of 48.7%.

How much does a virtual medical assistant for oncology practices cost?

Four firms publish rates: Care VMA Health starts at $9 an hour, Hello Rache is $9.50, Honest Taskers is $10.00 to $12.65, and HelpSquad Health is $8 to $10 for back-office work or $10 to $13 for patient-facing. Staffingly is $399 a week for 45 hours. A US medical secretary earned a median $22.08 an hour in May 2025 by comparison.

Do these companies sign a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement?

Some do and some state only HIPAA training, which is not the same. My Mountain Mover states a signed BAA is part of every healthcare contract, Virtual Nurse Rx provides one to every client, HelpSquad Health includes it in the rate, Staffingly reports a signed BAA alongside SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, and Honest Taskers signs one before PHI access.

How quickly can an assistant start?

Virtual Nurse Rx reports an average 48-hour deployment and Care VMA Health advertises 48-hour matching. My Mountain Mover states hiring within 7 to 14 days and Rockstar Global reports a 7 to 14 day implementation. Most of the elapsed time is your own onboarding, so preparing system access and a task list shortens it.

Can I try one without a long commitment?

Yes, Hello Rache states cancel anytime with no long-term commitment, Care VMA Health offers no long-term contracts and a Flexi Plan with no minimum hours, DocVA states a contract with no lock-in period, Virtual Nurse Rx is month-to-month, and Honest Taskers provides a two-week working trial on the first hire.

Will the assistant know oncology practice workflows?

Ask rather than assume. My Mountain Mover states pre-trained healthcare talent experienced in widely used electronic health records across 50-plus specialties, MEDVA names its practice-type breakdown, and DocVA states its assistants are experienced healthcare professionals. Request the specific assistant's background in oncology practices and who trains them on your systems.

Why does oncology need dedicated authorization support?

Because a delay has clinical consequences. Regimen and imaging authorizations are complex and frequently appealed, and every day of delay postpones treatment. A dedicated remote owner with named turnaround targets is worth more here than in almost any other specialty.

Can an assistant handle copay assistance applications?

Yes, and it often gets overlooked. Foundation and manufacturer assistance programs have their own paperwork, deadlines and renewal cycles, and patients abandon treatment over cost. Managing those applications has a direct effect on whether treatment continues.

Hiring an oncology virtual medical assistant differs from a general front-desk hire because the work sits on top of live treatment, and that difference frames everything else. What the role handles across the treatment journey comes next, since the queues are specific to oncology. Why chemotherapy prior authorization rewards a specialty-trained assistant follows, with the in-clinic cost math behind the decision. How the assistant coordinates infusion chair scheduling around regimen cycles, and how it moves patients through drug manufacturer assistance programs, cover the two workflows that hurt most when they slip. Which oncology platforms signal a candidate can start without a long ramp sets up the screening. Then the interview scenarios that expose authorization accuracy, and how you gauge a candidate's manner on a frightened patient call. How long the role takes to reach protocol fluency, what happens to a patient when an authorization slips past the treatment date, and where the assistant must stop and hand back to the clinical team round out the practical picture. Where these oncology hiring facts come from closes the page.

What makes hiring an oncology virtual medical assistant different from a general front-desk hire?

Hiring an oncology virtual medical assistant differs from a general front-desk hire because the work sits on top of live treatment, and a mistake delays chemotherapy rather than a routine visit. A front-desk hire books appointments and answers phones. An oncology hire moves a prior authorization for an infusion drug that can cost more than a car, schedules a chair around a regimen cycle that cannot slip, and talks to a patient who is frightened.

The stakes change what you screen for. You're no longer hiring for warmth and typing speed alone. Instead the role demands accuracy under a payer's rules and composure on a hard call. That single shift should shape your whole process, from the interview scenarios to the reference questions you ask. A candidate who is quick and friendly but loose with detail is a risk in oncology rather than an asset, and good screening surfaces that before the hire rather than after.

What does an oncology virtual medical assistant handle across the treatment journey?

An oncology virtual medical assistant handles the administrative flow around treatment and owns none of the treatment itself. Four queues cover most of the work, and each one maps to a point in the patient's journey.

Chemotherapy and infusion prior authorizations for patients, from the first submission through appeals and peer-to-peer requests.
Infusion chair scheduling that lines up the drug, the chair and the nurse for patients on each regimen's cycle day.
Financial navigation that moves patients through drug manufacturer patient assistance and copay foundation programs.
Patient communication, such as confirming appointments, chasing records and keeping patients informed with a steady manner.

Everything clinical stays put. Assessment, diagnosis, regimen selection, symptom triage, dosing and safety decisions all belong to the oncology care team. Your remote hire schedules, submits, tracks, chases and escalates. Which of these queues you outsource is a scoping decision rather than a clinical one, and that split is why the role saves clinician hours without ever touching a clinical call. One feature of this specialty shapes the hire itself. An administrative slip that would produce an awkward phone call elsewhere pushes back an infusion here, so reliability on detail outranks nearly everything else you screen for.

Why does chemotherapy prior authorization reward a specialty-trained oncology assistant?

Chemotherapy prior authorization rewards a specialty-trained assistant because the volume is high, the dollar amounts are large, and a single missing detail sends the request back with the treatment date approaching. A generalist has to look up what a regimen means before submitting. By contrast, a specialty-trained assistant reads the regimen and the payer policy without a clinician translating, which is where the time and the accuracy both come from.

The cost case is straightforward once you compare seats, and the wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics makes it concrete. Its "Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics" program put the May 2025 median for US medical secretaries and administrative assistants at $45,930 a year. That same agency reports, in its "Employer Costs for Employee Compensation" series for March 2026, an employer load of 48.7% on top of wages, which lands a loaded in-clinic admin seat near $68,252 a year. Honest Taskers rates run $10.00 to $12.65 an hour, billed hourly with no payroll taxes, benefits or workspace layered on top, so the arithmetic isn't close.

How does an oncology assistant coordinate infusion chair scheduling around regimens?

An oncology assistant coordinates infusion chair scheduling by working backward from the regimen cycle, so the chair, the drug and the nursing time all land on the treatment date the protocol calls for. A breast cancer regimen dosed every three weeks and a maintenance therapy dosed weekly place sharply different demands on a fixed number of chairs, and the assistant holds that calendar together.

The dependencies are what make this harder than ordinary booking. A chair means nothing without the drug ready and the prior authorization cleared, so the assistant sequences all three rather than treating scheduling as a standalone task. When lab work has to clear before an infusion proceeds, that gate goes in the schedule too. Practices still deciding whether this belongs off their clinicians' plates can read our explainer on what a virtual medical assistant is, which lays out the administrative boundary the role works inside. The clinical decision to proceed or hold always stays with the care team.

How does an oncology assistant move patients through drug manufacturer assistance programs?

An oncology assistant moves patients through drug manufacturer assistance programs by owning the paperwork trail that most patients cannot follow on their own during treatment. Financial toxicity is real in oncology, and the difference between a patient starting on time and a patient walking away is often a copay foundation application that nobody had time to file.

The assistant screens for eligibility, gathers income documentation, submits manufacturer patient assistance and copay foundation applications, and tracks each one to approval or denial. It re-enrolls patients before a grant lapses, since a copay program that expires mid-regimen creates the same crisis as one that was never filed. This is clerical work with a direct financial consequence for the patient, which is exactly the kind of task our list of tasks to outsource to a virtual medical assistant is built around. The assistant never counsels a patient on whether to accept treatment based on cost, because that conversation belongs to the clinical team.

Which oncology platforms signal a candidate can start without a long ramp?

Several oncology platforms signal a candidate can start without a long ramp, such as Epic's oncology module, OncoEMR, iKnowMed and Flatiron. Naming one of these tells you the person has worked inside oncology-specific ordering and scheduling rather than a general EHR, and that shortens the learning curve on your own system.

Oncology platforms and what experience with each signals
Platform	What it is	What the experience signals
Epic (oncology module)	The oncology-specific ordering module inside the Epic EHR	Regimen-level ordering and infusion scheduling in a larger health system
OncoEMR	A dedicated oncology EHR	Community oncology workflows, chair scheduling and treatment plans
iKnowMed	An oncology EHR used by community practices	Regimen management and payer workflows in a community setting
Flatiron	An oncology data and EHR platform	Structured treatment data and reporting familiarity

None of these is a hard requirement. A candidate who ran infusion scheduling in one oncology system usually adapts to another faster than a generalist learns the first, so treat the platform as a signal rather than a filter. Ask what they did inside it day to day, since read-only access and daily ordering look the same on a resume.

What interview scenarios expose an oncology candidate's authorization accuracy?

The scenarios that expose authorization accuracy are the ones that force a candidate to work a real denial rather than describe a process. Talking through a clean submission tells you little. Watching someone react to a rejection tells you almost everything.

A payer denies an infusion drug authorization for missing documentation two days before the scheduled treatment. Walk me through your next hour.
A regimen authorization you submitted was approved for three cycles, and the patient is starting cycle four. What do you check before treatment day?
A prior authorization number on file doesn't match the drug the order now specifies. What do you do?
Which oncology drug denials have you seen most often, and what authorization detail got them approved on appeal?

Listen for a candidate who names the treatment date as the clock everything runs against, and who escalates to a clinician for a peer-to-peer rather than arguing clinical necessity themselves. Someone who treats a denial as a puzzle to solve on a deadline is describing the job. Whoever treats it as paperwork to resubmit and wait on has missed what an oncology denial costs when it slips.

How do you gauge an oncology candidate's manner on a frightened patient call?

You gauge a candidate's manner by running the call live in the interview rather than asking how they'd handle one. Have someone play a patient who just heard the word "cancer" and is calling about a delayed appointment, and listen to the first ten seconds. That's where manner shows, before anyone has a chance to perform.

Strong candidates slow down, acknowledge the fear without pretending to fix it, and route the patient to the right person for anything clinical. They don't rush to reassurance, and they don't offer opinions about prognosis or treatment. Weak candidates either go cold and transactional or overstep into comfort they aren't qualified to give, and both are wrong for different reasons. Ask a follow-up too, which is what they'd say when a patient asks a question they can't answer. The right response names a clinician and a timeframe rather than a guess, because a warm guess in oncology can do real harm. A reference check helps too: ask a previous employer whether the candidate stayed steady with upset callers rather than going quiet.

How long does an oncology virtual medical assistant take to reach protocol fluency?

An oncology virtual medical assistant reaches basic fluency within the first weeks and deepens it over the opening months, and the range depends almost entirely on prior oncology exposure. A candidate who has worked infusion authorizations before is productive quickly. Someone newer to oncology takes longer to learn what a regimen means and how a payer reads it, so set the timeline against the person rather than a fixed calendar.

You can shorten the ramp with structure. Give the assistant your regimen list, your top payers' policies and a named clinician to escalate to, and fluency comes faster than it does by osmosis. Honest Taskers completes most placements within one to three weeks of a signed agreement and includes a two-week working trial with a client's first selected professional, subject to current service terms, which gives you a window to watch the ramp before you commit. Practices still sizing the workload can lean on our guide to the signs your practice needs a virtual assistant to decide whether the volume justifies a hire.

What happens to a patient when an oncology authorization slips past the treatment date?

When an oncology authorization slips past the treatment date, the patient's infusion is delayed or rescheduled, and in oncology a delay is not a neutral event. Some regimens depend on timing between cycles, so a slip can mean more than an inconvenient rebooking. That's the reason authorization accuracy carries more weight here than in almost any other specialty.

The downstream effects stack up quickly. A rescheduled infusion cascades into a chair that now sits empty, a nurse whose day was built around it, and a patient who took time off work and arranged a ride for nothing. It also raises anxiety in someone already frightened, which is its own cost. A specialty-trained assistant tracking each authorization against its treatment date is how a practice keeps these slips rare. When one does happen, the clinical team decides whether the regimen can safely wait or has to be adjusted, and the assistant handles the rescheduling and the patient communication around that decision. The point of the role is to make the slip a rare exception rather than a weekly fire.

Where must an oncology assistant stop and hand back to the clinical team?

An oncology assistant must stop at any point that requires clinical judgment and hand back to the care team, which is the fixed limit on the whole role. Treatment decisions, symptom triage and any clinical judgment stay with the oncology clinicians. The assistant handles administration and coordination only, and that line does not bend under pressure or workload.

In practice the boundary shows up in specific moments. A patient calling to report a new fever or worsening side effects gets routed to a clinician immediately, not managed on the line. Any question about whether a dose should change, whether a regimen can wait, or what a scan result means goes to the care team every time. The assistant can say what's already documented and confirm what a clinician has decided, but it never assesses, never advises and never decides. That administrative-only scope is the same boundary our explainer on what a virtual medical assistant is draws for every specialty. Write those escalation paths down before the first shift, because the moments that test the boundary are the ones where a patient is scared and pushing for an answer now.

Where do these oncology hiring facts come from?

Honest Taskers rates, placement timelines, trial terms and compliance posture come from the company's own published rate card and service terms. Wage context for the in-house comparison comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics "Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics" program for May 2025, with the employer load percentage from its "Employer Costs for Employee Compensation" series for March 2026, both linked above. The oncology platform names, regimen-cycle scheduling and patient assistance workflows describe how oncology practices operate, and this page names no denial rate, approval percentage or savings figure, because your own payer mix and regimen list decide those. Platform and competitor specifics are unverified by policy and should be confirmed against each vendor before you rely on them.

Where the role is settled and you'd rather compare providers than candidates, see our ranking of oncology virtual medical assistant companies. It lines up how each firm states HIPAA and BAA terms, what it publishes on pricing and commitment, and where it fits a practice that runs high-volume chemotherapy authorizations and infusion scheduling.

Request candidates with oncology authorization and infusion scheduling experience.

Honest Taskers, Coronis Health, and RelateCare lead this year's shortlist of oncology virtual medical assistant companies, seven firms ranked on published pricing, the Business Associate Agreement position each states in its own words, commitment terms, and what each publishes about itself. For oncology practices the work that matters is obtaining authorization for chemotherapy regimens. Below we set out what gets cleared between the decision and the first treatment, what an authorization delay postpones, what the work costs, whether a provider completes assistance applications, and which delay to remove first. Of the seven here, two publish a rate and one states a signed BAA, and those two columns narrow the list faster than any claim about quality.

Disclosure: Honest Taskers publishes this list and appears at position 1. We're judged on the same five published criteria as every other company here.

How we chose the best oncology virtual medical assistant companies

We ranked these firms on five facts, each read at the provider's own website on August 24, 2026: the scope each offers oncology practices, the HIPAA and Business Associate Agreement position in the firm's exact wording, published pricing, commitment terms, and the verified detail each publishes. We ignored claims about screening quality and talent percentiles, because every firm in this market makes them and none is checkable from outside. What's checkable is what a firm will commit to. For oncology practices the additional question is whether the assistant can handle imaging and supportive medications without being taught the basics first.

Best oncology virtual medical assistant companies compared

The table ranks all 7 on the same columns, Honest Taskers first because we publish the list. Facts were read on August 24, 2026 and change often, so treat them as a starting point, not a quote.

Oncology virtual medical assistant companies compared on the criteria stated below, read at each provider's own site.
Company	What the firm offers	HIPAA / BAA as stated	Published pricing	Model	Notable verified facts
Honest Taskers	Hourly placed staff working in your own systems across reception, intake, records, prior authorization, billing support and patient outreach	BAA when PHI is accessed; HIPAA compliance verified by Accountable	$10.00–$12.65/hr	Hourly, no minimum; two-week trial	Licensed nurses and physicians in pool; 99.6% average monthly retention
Coronis Health	Outsourced function	Not publicly listed	Not publicly listed	Outsourced revenue cycle	Medical billing and coding, RCM, claims and AR follow-up; Behavioral health, community health centers, hospitals, health systems, physician groups; Not publicly listed
RelateCare	Nurse triage and post-discharge follow-up	Not publicly listed	Not publicly listed	Managed clinical program	Telephonic nurse triage giving 24/7 access to healthcare advice; also post-discharge follow-up and wellness programs
Neolytix	Virtual assistants alongside revenue cycle management, coding audit, CVO credentialing, provider enrollment and licensing	ISO 27001 certified; HIPAA stated	Not publicly listed	Not publicly listed	VAs plus RCM and credentialing; 270+ orgs, 31 specialties, 40 states
Wing Assistant	Healthcare virtual assistant and customer service roles with 24/7 specialist availability	Healthcare VA product named; no HIPAA detail published	Not publicly listed	Not publicly listed	10,000+ active assistants and 2M+ screened yearly, both company-reported; 24/7 cover
MyOutDesk	General administrative support, customer service, bookkeeping, marketing, inside sales and transaction coordination	SOC 2 certified and audited (company-reported); "HIPAA Verified"; PCI-DSS ready	$1,988/mo managed; $2,500/mo specialized	Full time only, 8h x 5d	17+ years; 8,500+ businesses served; hire in ~1 week; "top 0.7% of talent" is its own claim
Virtual Latinos	Latin America	States no signed BAA	$1.8K–$3.7K/mo	Placed remote staff	$1.8K–$3.7K/mo full-time (160 hrs/mo), tiered by experience; Healthcare and medical line; patient scheduling, billing support; "HIPAA-conscious" training, NDAs; no signed

Read the compliance and pricing columns together. The firms that publish a rate aren't the ones with the weakest compliance position, which is the usual assumption, and several firms publish neither a price nor commitment terms nor a Business Associate Agreement, which means three separate negotiations before you can compare them to anything. For oncology practices the scope column matters too, because coordinating the treatment calendar across infusion isn't work every provider has done before.

1. Honest Taskers

Best for: oncology practices that want a published hourly rate, a signed BAA and third-party verified compliance with no minimum.

Pricing: $10.00–$12.65/hrCompliance: HIPAA verified by Accountable; BAACommitment: Hourly, no minimumFirst hire: Two-week working trial

Honest Taskers is where this list starts because the compliance and pricing questions are answered in public rather than in a quote. For oncology practices the placed assistant works your time zone inside your own systems on obtaining authorization for chemotherapy regimens, imaging and supportive medications, coordinating the treatment calendar across infusion, and imaging and clinic visits. Staff are trained on HIPAA and data privacy under a dedicated compliance officer, a Business Associate Agreement is signed before anyone touches protected health information, and HIPAA compliance is verified by Accountable rather than asserted internally. The talent pool includes licensed nurses and physicians. Rates run $10.00 to $12.65 an hour depending on role, background, schedule and location, billed hourly with no weekly minimum, and the first hire comes with a two-week working trial. Honest Taskers reports 99.6% average monthly retention. See the multi-purpose virtual medical assistant service for role detail.

Limitation: staff work remotely and administratively, so clinical assessment, treatment decisions and every clinical conversation in oncology practices stays with your own clinicians, and Honest Taskers describes its security environment as SOC 2 audit ready rather than holding a SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification of the kind Staffingly and MyOutDesk publish.

2. Coronis Health

Best for: Oncology practices weighing a revenue cycle option alongside placed assistants.

Pricing: Not publicly listedCompliance: Not publicly listedModel: Outsourced revenue cycleCategory: Revenue cycle

Coronis Health is an outsourced revenue cycle firm, which is the right shape when the bottleneck is authorization and claims rather than front-desk cover. From the company's own material: Outsourced function; Medical billing and coding, RCM, claims and AR follow-up; Client types: Behavioral health, community health centers, hospitals, health systems, physician groups.

Limitation: publishes neither pricing, delivery location nor any named certification

3. RelateCare

Best for: Oncology practices weighing a care management option alongside placed assistants.

Pricing: Not publicly listedCompliance: Not publicly listedModel: Managed clinical programCategory: Care management

RelateCare supplies clinical care management rather than administrative staff, so it answers a different half of the problem than a placed assistant does. On its own site: What it is: Nurse triage and post-discharge follow-up; Verified facts: Telephonic nurse triage giving 24/7 access to healthcare advice; also post-discharge follow-up and wellness programs.

Limitation: enterprise-oriented, so pricing and small-practice fit both need confirming

4. Neolytix

Best for: small oncology practices whose need spans assistants, billing and credentialing.

Pricing: Not publicly listedCompliance: ISO 27001 certifiedCommitment: Not publicly listedBase: Chicago

Neolytix is the option that scales down to a small practice. It's the option that scales down rather than up, publishing explicit small-practice and mid-market tiers where most firms chase larger contracts. Virtual assistants sit alongside revenue cycle management, coding audit, credentials verification organization credentialing, provider enrollment and licensing, so one firm can absorb the billing or credentialing work an assistant would otherwise be chasing. It reports 270-plus organizations across 31 specialties in 40 states and is ISO 27001 certified.

Limitation: it publishes no pricing and no commitment terms, and its center of gravity is revenue cycle work rather than front-office staffing.

5. Wing Assistant

Best for: oncology practices needing round-the-clock cover or fast replacement from the deepest bench.

Pricing: Not publicly listedCompliance: No HIPAA detail publishedCommitment: Not publicly listedScale: 10,000+ active assistants

Wing Assistant is the scale option, which means replacement speed and out-of-hours cover. It brings the deepest bench of any firm here, reporting more than 10,000 active assistants and more than two million applicants screened annually, with 24/7 specialist availability and a company-reported 4.8 out of 5 average rating. A healthcare virtual assistant is one of its named products alongside customer service representatives and administrative and executive assistants, so scale and out-of-hours coverage are its arguments.

Limitation: it publishes no pricing, no delivery location, no commitment terms and no HIPAA detail beyond having a healthcare product.

6. MyOutDesk

Best for: oncology practices wanting a published monthly rate, a SOC 2 audit and general business breadth.

Pricing: $1,988/mo managed; $2,500/mo specializedCompliance: SOC 2 audited; HIPAA VerifiedCommitment: Full time onlyExperience: 17+ years

MyOutDesk is the generalist with the strongest audit trail. It publishes $1,988 a month for managed outsourcing and $2,500 for specialized support, both full time at eight hours a day five days a week, around $12 an hour at the lower tier. Its compliance documentation is unusually strong for a generalist: SOC 2 certified and audited (company-reported), described as HIPAA Verified, and HIPAA and PCI-DSS compliance ready. It reports 17-plus years, 8,500 or more businesses served and hiring in as little as one week.

Limitation: it is a generalist rather than a healthcare specialist, offers no part-time option, and "HIPAA Verified" is its own description rather than an independent certification.

7. Virtual Latinos

Best for: Oncology practices weighing a regional staffing option alongside placed assistants.

Pricing: $1.8K–$3.7K/moCompliance: States no signed BAAModel: Placed remote staffCategory: Regional staffing

Virtual Latinos recruits in one specific region and prices for that region, which is worth knowing before comparing it to a US-managed firm. Read from its own site: Talent location (as stated): Latin America; Published pricing: $1.8K–$3.7K/mo full-time (160 hrs/mo), tiered by experience; Healthcare roles named: Healthcare and medical line.

Limitation: no BAA is described publicly, which is a real gap for PHI work

What does an oncology virtual medical assistant clear between the decision and the first treatment?

Authorization for chemotherapy regimens, imaging and supportive medications, which is the paperwork standing in that gap. The cost gap is large: a medical secretary or administrative assistant earned a median $22.08 an hour, about $45,930 a year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 wage data for secretaries and administrative assistants, before benefits, payroll tax and a desk, against published remote rates from $9 an hour. Keep in the building whatever genuinely needs a person there: greeting patients, physical specimens and mail, and anything requiring a wet signature. The practical route is to start with the single task costing you the most rather than defining a whole role upfront, because the job's easier to scope once somebody's doing it. Hourly and cancel-anytime arrangements suit that far better than a quarterly minimum. For the task-level breakdown, see virtual medical assistant duties.

What does an authorization delay postpone when an oncology virtual medical assistant is not chasing it?

Treatment, not payment, which is why chasing is settled with four contractual points before anyone starts.

BAA versus HIPAA training. A Business Associate Agreement puts breach liability in writing. "HIPAA-trained" describes a person who sat a course. Five firms in this market state a BAA; the rest state training. Ask which you are getting, in writing.
Authorization delaying treatment start. In oncology an authorization delay postpones treatment, not just payment. Ask for turnaround targets, escalation routes and who writes appeals.
Commitment before certainty. Terms run from a Flexi Plan with no minimum hours to a 3-month minimum at 20 hours a week. Match the term to how sure you are.
Access scope. Grant the minimum systems access each task needs and review it quarterly and on every staff change.
Time zone against your day. Ask for the shift pattern rather than the delivery country, which matters most where staff are offshore.

How much does an oncology virtual medical assistant cost?

Two firms publish a rate here. Honest Taskers is $10.00 to $12.65 an hour with no weekly minimum. MyOutDesk publishes $1,988 a month full time. The other five on this list, Coronis Health, RelateCare, Neolytix, Wing Assistant and Virtual Latinos, quote on request. For oncology practices the unit worth computing is cost per authorization obtained without delaying treatment, which you can work out from a two-week sample rather than from a quote. Rates were checked on August 24, 2026 and change often. For rate context, see how much a virtual medical assistant costs in 2026.

Can the oncology virtual medical assistant company complete patient assistance applications?

Ask which programs it has filed with, plus a signed BAA, a published rate and an exit you can use.

A signed Business Associate Agreement. Five firms in this market state one. Get the document before access, not after the first shift.
A published rate. An undisclosed rate means you negotiate compliance terms alongside the money.
An exit you can use. Cancel-anytime, no lock-in, month-to-month and a no-minimum Flexi Plan all exist here.
Named turnaround and escalation. Ask for the authorization turnaround target and the escalation path, because delay here is a clinical issue.
Named systems experience. Ask which practice management and EHR systems the specific assistant has worked in, and who trains them on yours.

Which oncology delay should a virtual medical assistant remove first?

Days from decision to treatment start, because it is the one number in this specialty with a clinical cost attached.

Measure one month of days from decision to treatment start and assistance applications completed so you have a baseline to judge against.
List the five tasks you would hand over in week one, with the system each requires.
Mark which touch protected health information, which decides whether a BAA is mandatory.
Shortlist on stated BAA, published pricing and exit terms before reading any quality claims.
Review at four weeks against the baseline rather than against an impression, then widen scope.

Methodology and sources

We read each company's own website on August 24, 2026, recording the scope offered, the HIPAA and Business Associate Agreement position in each firm's exact wording, published pricing, commitment terms and the verified facts each publishes. We set aside claims about screening quality and talent percentiles, because every firm makes them and none is checkable from outside; where such figures appear above they are labelled as the company's own claim. Wage context is from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics. Business Associate Agreement obligations are set by the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules. Where a company published no figure we marked it "not publicly listed" rather than guessing; practice counts, retention rates and savings claims are company-reported and we did not audit them. Portiva, Pearl Talent and Wishup were excluded because their sites refuse automated requests, and Phoenix Virtual Solutions was excluded because its domain now returns an expiration notice.

The fastest way to narrow this market is to decide which tasks touch patient data, because that single question removes several firms. Our explainer on what a virtual medical assistant is covers the scope a remote hire can own for oncology practices, and where the compliance obligation begins.
